List of Kevrei Tzadikim

A list of the Kevrei Tzadikim where Yesod Yosef donors were prayed for. Aside from the main Yesod Yosef prayer list we also give list of donors Hebrew names along with each distribution and it can very well be assumed that the names were mentioned in many other holy locations as well.

Cave of Abba Shaul

Abba Shaul was a 3rd generation Tana that is mentioned in the Mishna. Born before the destruction of the 2nd Temple, he gave over many testimonies about what he saw there. In his youth Aba Shaul studied under Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai. Tradition places the Kever of Abba Shaul and his wife in Biriya cave. However the holy Arizal  revealed that this kever belongs to a different Tzadik who he did not name.

 

Rav Amram Chasida

Rabbi Amram Chasida was born in 1790 and was appointed as the chief rabbi of Urisha at age 24. Six years later he was appointed as rabbi of Moud. He was known for his piety and righteousness, earning him the title ‘Chasida’. He moved to Eretz Yisroel in 1826 and settled in Safed. Three years after his arrival he passed away and is buried in Tzfat.

 

Antigonus Ish Socho

Antigonus Ish Socho was a student of Shimon HaTzadik, replacing his teacher as Nasi after his passing. Living around 250 years before the destruction of the Temple he bridged the era of the Anshi Knesset Hagedola to the era of the Zuggos. His students Yossi ben Yoezer and Yossi ben Yochanan were the first pair of Zuggos.

 

The Holy Arizal

The Holy Arizal was one of the leading Kabbalists throughout history and his teaching set the foundations for of all modern Kabbalah. He was known to be from one of the 5 main Tazdikim throughout history. The Holy Ari is buried in Tzfat.

 

Benayahu ben Yehoyada

Benayahu ben Yehoyada was the famous general of King Shlomo. Aside from being mighty warrior he was also a renown Torah scholar and a leading Kabbalist. Benayahu is well know in his vital role of attaining the Shamir worm for the building of the first Beis Hamikdash. He is buried in Birya.

Binyamin HaTzadik

Binyamin HaTzadik was a Tana living during the time of the 2nd Bais Hamikdash. He served as a Gabbi Tzedaka and once saved a woman and her seven children from dying of hunger during years of famine.  Binyamin Hatzadik is buried in Tzfat.

Rebbe Chutzpis HameTurgeman

Rebbe Chutzpis HameTurgeman was a third generation Tana and the personal elucidator of the Nasi Rabban Gamliel. At age 130 Rabbi Chutzpit was murdered by the Romans one of the Ten Martyrs. He is buried in Tzfat.

 

Rebbe Dosa ben Hurkanus

Rebbe Dosa ben Hurkanus was the elder of the Sages during the 3rd and 4th generations of Tanaim. Great Tzadikim such as Rebbe Yehoshua and Rebbe Akiva stood in awe in front of him. He is buried in Tzfat in the Cave of Shem and Ever.

Rebbe Elazar ben Arach

Rabbi Eleazar ben Arach was one of the five main students of Rabbi Yochanan be Zakki, living at the time of the destruction of the Second Temple. Rabbi Elazar Ben Arach is buried in the village of Alama in Northern Israel.

Rebbe Elazar ben Azarya

Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah was a second / third generation Tana who was temporarily appointed as Nasi at age 18 when Rabbi Gamliel was expelled from his position. Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah was a Kohen and a tenth generation descendant of Ezra Hasofer. Rebbe Eleazar ben Azariah studied under Rabbi Yossi Haglili and then moved to Yavneh joining the Sages of the Mishna. He is buried in Alama.

 

Rebbe Elazar Hamodai

Rabbi Elazar Hamodai was a third generation Tana, counted amongst the Sages of Yavneh, originating from Modiim. He was the Uncle of Bar Kochva, a failed Moshiach and leader of the great Beitar revolt. During the revolt, Rabbi Elazar Hamodai’s merit and prayers saved the city from being overtaken by the Romans until he was killed by his nephew for suspected treason. Rabbi Elazar HaModai is buried in the village of Navarna.

Rebbe Eliezar the son of Rebbe Yossi Haglili

Rebbe Eliezer son of Rabbi Yossi Haglili was a forth generation Tana living during the 2nd century who was counted amongst the Sages of Usha. His main teacher was Rabbi Akiva. Rabbi Eliezer ben Rabbi Yossi Haglili is mentioned numerous Brisos throughout the Talmud and Midrashim. He is the author of the Baraisa of the Thirty-Two Rules in which the Torah can be hermeneutically interpreted. He is buried in Dalton.

 

Rebbe Meir Baal Hanes

Rabbi Meir Bal Hanes was a fourth generation Tana and one of the most respected Jewish Sages during the time of the Mishnah. Rabbi Meir served as one of the main leaders in Israel during the generation following the Bar Kochba rebellion. He is buried in the outskirts of Tiberias, near the shores of the Kinneret. Rebbe Meir Baal Haness has a reputation of being a miracle worker even after his death.

 

Rebbe Moshe Alshich

Rebbe Moshe Alshich was a 16th century Rabbi who lived in Tezfas during its Golden Era. He was a student of Rabbi Yosef Karo and his students included Rabbi Chaim Vital and Rabbi Yom Tov Tzahalon. Rabbi Moshe Alshich was known for his homiletical sermons and authored close to 20 books, most notably the ‘Torat Moshe’ He is buried in Tzfat.

 

Rabbi Moshe Cordovero – RAMAK

Rabbi Moshe Cordovero was one of the leading Kabbalists of Tzfat and brother in law of Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz. He is known by the acronym the Ramak and is buried in the Tzfas cemetery.

 

Rebbe Moshe di Trani – MABIT

Rabbi Moshe ben Yosef di Trani also known as the Mabit was a student of Rabbi Yakov Beirav. He served as head of the Safed bais din alongside Rabbi Yosef Karo during the city’s ‘golden era‘, until he moved to Yerushalaim. He is buried in Tzfat.

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov

Rabbi Nachman of Breslev was the founder of the Breslov Hasidim and a great grandson of the Bal Shem Tov. In his relatively short life of 38 years, Rebbe Nachman reached very high spiritual levels and gave over many powerful and inspirational teachings. Rebbe Nachman is buried in the city of Uman, Ukraine and thousands of Jews flock to his grave site each year for the Rosh Hashanah Kibutz.

Rebbe Nachum Ish Gam Zu

Rebbe Nachum Ish Gam Zu was a third generation Tana and a teacher of Rebbe Akiva who serviced him for 22 years. He was known to say  ‘This to is for the best’ (gam zu l’tova) regardless of what happened to him; good or bad. Rebbe Nachum is buried in Tzfat.

Natan Dezuzita

Nason Ditzutzisa was one of the greatest Bali Teshuva to have ever lived, through his tremendous Teshuva he merited to reach high spiritual levels. According to one opinion Natan Dezuzita lived during the 3rd generation of Tanaim at the time of Rebbe Akiva. According to a second opinion he is identified with Mar Ukban III Resh Galuta.

Rebbe Pinchas Ben Yair

Rebbe Pinchas Ben Yair was a 4th generation Tana and father in law of Rebbe Shimon bar Yochi. He excelled in his attachment to the Mitzovs of Masser and Pidyon Shevuim and is well know for his teachings of the levels necessary to attain Rouch Hakodesh. Rebbe Pinchas is buried in Tzfat.

Rebbe Shimon Bar Yochi

Rebbe Shimon Bar Yochi was a fourth generation Tana and the author of the holy Zohar. After escaping a death sentence from the Roman government he hid in a cave with his son, where they attained extremely lofty levels of holiness and revelations. Rebbe Shimon is known to be one of the main 5 Tzadikim throughout history. He is buried in Meron.

Rebbe Shimon ben Elazar

Rebbe  Shimon ben Elazar  was a fifth generation Tana and a leading student of Rabbi Meir. He is only mentioned a few times in the Mishna but numerous times in the Tosefta, Brisos and Talmud.

Rebbe Shimon of Kremenchuk

Rabbi Shimon of Kremenchuk was the first student of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and later served as his Shamesh and personal assistant. Rabbi Nachman promised him that he would be able to continue this position after his death. Rabbi Shimon Breslover is buried in the ancient cemetery of Tzfat.

 

Rebbe Shimon Shizuri

Rebbe Shimon Shizuri was fourth generation tana and a student of Rabbi Tarfon, originating from the village of Shazur. He was friends with Rabbi Shimon, Rabbi Yehuda, Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Yossi.

 

Reb Shimshon Barsky

Reb Shimshon Barsky was a descendent of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and the author of Eitzos HaMevuoros. He was one of the leading Breslov Chasidim in Uman before the Communists took over the country. He passed away on Rosh Chodesh Sivan, 1935.

 

Rabbi Shmuel Heller

Rabbi Shmuel Heller was student of Rabbi Avraham Dov of Avritch and eventually replaced him as the leading rabbi of Safed. He was renown as a doctor and healer and was respected by both Jews and Arabs alike. Shmuel Horowitz a famous Breslov Chasid was a descendant of his. He is buried in the Tzfat Cemetery.

 

Rebbe Yackov Birav

Rabbi Yackov Beirav was born in Spain and studied under Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav. He was 18 years old at the time of the Expulsion and traveled to Fes, Morocco where he served as a rabbi. From there he moved to Cairo and was appointed as a Dayan in the Beis Din of the Ridbaz, eventually moving to Safed and serving as its head Rabbi. Rabbi Yakov Beirav tried to reinitiate the Smicha and transferred it to his 4 main students. He is buried in Tzfat.

 

Rav Yeva Saba

Rav Yeva Saba was a Babylonian Sage who was active during the third and fourth generations of the Amoraim. He was a student of Rav Chisda and Rav Nachman and is buried in Meron.

Rebbe Yehoshua ben Chananya

Rebbe Yehoshua ben Chananya was second generation Tana and one of the five main students of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai. He is often quoted in the Mishnah and served as  Av Beis Din in the Sanhedrin of Yavneh and Rosh Yeshiva in Piki’in. Rebbe Yehoshua is buried in Tzfat.

Yehoyada HaKohen

Yehoyada Hakohen served as leader of the Kohanim and possibly as Kohen Gadol after the Nov massacre until Dovid gained full Kingship over Yisroel. He was the father of Binayahu, one of King Dovid’s warriors and a leading Kabbalist. He is buried in Tzfat.

 

Rebbe Yehuda Bar Iloy

Rebbe Yehuda Bar Iloy was a forth generation Tana and is the most quoted sage in the Mishna.  He was a student of Rebbe Akiva and one of the five students ordained by Rebbe Yehuda ben Baba. Rebbe Yehuda is buried in Ein Zetim.

 

 Rebbe Yishoel Kohen Gadoel

Rebbe Yishoel ben Elisha was a first generation Tana who served as Kohen Gadol shortly before the destruction of the Second Temple. He was executed along with Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel as part of the Ten Martyrs. Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha was a great Kabbalist and would often see visions of angels.

Rebbe Yitzchak from Meron

Rebbe Yitzchak from Meron is buried right at the entrance of the tomb of Rebbe Shimon Bar Yochai. There is much contemplation regarding his exact identity. He can not be Rebbe Yitzchak from the Zohar or Rebbe Yitzchak Napcha, since the Arizal revealed that they are buried in Tzfat and Teveriah.

Rabbi Yochanan Hasandlar

Rabbi Yochanan Hasandlar was a fourth generation Tana and one of the main students of Rabbi Akiva. A descendant of King Dovid, he is buried in Meron.

 

Yonasan Ben Uziel

Yonasan Ben Uziel  was a first generation Tana and the greatest of Hillel the Elder’s eighty students. He lived right before the destruction of the Second Temple, authored the Targum on Navi and was considered to be one of the greatest mystics of his generation. He is buried in Amuka

 

Rebbe Yosef Karo

Rebbe Yosef Karo was a leading Halachic authority and author of the Beis Yosef and the Shulchan Aruch.  At age 48 he moved to Tzfat, becoming its chief Rabbi after his mentor Rabbi Yackov Beirav left the city. Rabbi Yosef Caro was frequently visited by an angelic Maggid who would reveal mysteries of the Torah. He is buried in Tzfat.

 

Rabbi Yossi Banaa

Rabbi Yossi Bana’a was a fourth generation Tana, living during the time of Rabbi Meir. He would hired himself out as a day laborer for construction jobs to earn a living. In the Midrash he is referred to as Abba Yosef HaBanai and carries a deep conversation with the non Jewish philosopher Avnimus HaGredi regarding the creation of the world. He is buried in Tzfat.

 

Rebbe Yossi HaCohen

Rabbi Yossi Kakohen was one of the five main students of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakki, who called him the Chasid of the generation. He is buried in the village of Alamah.
